Gary Carter and the Meaning of Memories

I wrote a Gary Carter obituary for Grantland.

As you might expect, I was at that game when Carter hit the game-winning double to end his career. Seemed like I went to every significant game between 1982 and 1997. Always for just a couple bucks, always on walk-up tickets, and always sneaking into the good seats when ushers’ backs were turned.

My Favorite Canada Day Story

July 1, 1997.

I’d just graduated from college and was engaged to be married two months later, on Labor Day weekend. By this point, I should have been in Washington, DC, moved in with my fiancee. Of course this assumes that I wasn’t a complete dimwit when I was 22.
